Armstrong Atlantic State University, more often referred to as Armstrong or simply AASU, is a state university located in Savannah, which is the largest city and the county seat of Chatham County, in the US state of Georgia, having a population estimated at a number of more than 132 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census.
AASU was founded in 1935, first starting as Armstrong Junior College and being originally located in the historic Armstrong House, in downtown Savannah. Over the years, Armstrong Junior College grew and in 1959 it became a two-year unit of the University System of Georgia. In 1966, the college moved to its present location, as Armstrong State College, 30 years later being designated a university by the Georgia Board of Regents, adopting its current name - Armstrong Atlantic State University.
Today, AASU has an enrollment approximated at a number of nearly 7000 students, and offers associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs, in various fields of study, including in criminal justice, math, music, history, nursing, public health and many other. AASU's College of Health Professions is the largest and most comprehensive health professions education center of its kind in the state.
The athletic teams from AASU are known as the Pirates, who compete in NCAA Division II, in various sports for men and women, including in softball, volleyball, basketball, soccer, golf and tennis. The Pirates have experienced success in many of the sports in which they compete, including in women's tennis, in which they won NCAA National Championships in 1995, 1996, 2005, 2008, and 2009, the men's team also winning the 2008 and 2009 championships, both of the teams (men's and women's) finishing 1st in the 2008 and 2009 Division II National Championships.
Heath Schroyer, the men's basketball coach at the University of Wyoming, is AASU's most notable alumni.
